Swartland Renosterveld Surveys

Would you like to know if your land is home to rare and endangered Swartland Renosterveld plants?

We are pleased to advise that our organization offers a unique service to landowners in the form of botanical surveys.

In line with our mission of protecting and conserving the Swartland’s unique flora, this service is gratis and is available to landowners throughout the greater Swartland region, wherever remnants of renosterveld occur.

The primary focus of these botanical surveys is to ascertain whether or not threatened  renosterveld plant species are present on your property. To ensure that important plant populations are not missed, our surveys entail the monitoring of the target site for a full twelve month period. One-off botanical surveys are likely to miss many Swartland Renosterveld species given that flowering is seasonal with different species blooming at particular times of the year.

Interested landowners, farmers, agribusinesses, quarries, etcetera in the Swartland region are encouraged to join our initiative and have their farms or properties surveyed for the presence of threatened Swartland Renosterveld plant species.

Botanists

We welcome the input and assistance of botanical researchers and academics from the SANBI, herbaria, universities and other institutions both locally and abroad. Given that we are a non-profit organization, this would normally be on an unpaid voluntary basis. In certain cases, however, nominal honorariums may be issued to cover participating researcher’s travel expenses etcetera.

We are also keen to work together with amateur botanists based in the Swartland region who are likely to have particularly useful “local knowledge” of the renosterveld plants unique to their local home areas.

If you have inputs or knowledge that you would like to share with us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Contribute

The protection and conservation of threatened Swartland Renosterveld plant species is reliant on adequate funding. This is even more so the case in the Swartland where the scale of the burgeoning biodiversity crisis is huge. The purchase of land for the establishment of new nature reserves to conserve Swartland Renosterveld is highly capital intensive, while the ongoing control of invasive alien plants requires a constant source of cashflow.

We need your support! Corporate sponsorships are a lifeline for the Swartland’s threatened renosterveld flora!

Report a Case

Swartland Renosterveld’s imperilled plants are extremely sensitive to habitat degradation caused by invasive alien plants as well as habitat loss through land-use changes. Even the action of cutting the grass on road verges has potentially devastating repercussions for the threatened plant populations of the Swartland Renosterveld.

Should you be aware of an activity (or invasive alien vegetation) that is threatening a rare or endangered plant population, please don’t hesitate to Report a Case.

We will endeavour to investigate, consult with the relevant parties and explore available recourses until a satisfactory outcome is achieved.

We cannot be complacent and allow our precious renosterveld flora to be bullied. Proactive and concrete steps are needed to secure our floral heritage for future generations!
